About the school

The Croydon School of Taekwon-Do is a member of The British United Taekwon-Do Federation, established in 1988 (The Year of the Dragon). The School opened in April 1999 just after Mr Joannou was promoted to 3rd Degree Black Belt. (Mr Joannou is now a 4th Degree International instructor).
We aim to teach authentic, undiluted Taekwon-do as formulated by the founder, General Choi Hong Hi 9th Dan.
We Train on Tuesdays and Saturdays and for keen students there are always extra classes available at one of our other schools, the next nearest classes are held at Tooting on Mondays and Thursdays.
There are different elements to Taekwon-do, these include:
Patterns - At each grade you will learn a new pattern (Tul). This is a series of defensive and offensive movements, set in a logical sequence against imaginary opponents. Each pattern will be a little more complex than the last to ensure your skills develop.
sparring - Controlled fighting against one sometimes two opponents.
destruction - Power tests in which feet & hands are used to break boards.
Fitness and flexibility training makes Taekwon-do students stand out above other martial arts, but don't worry you will be able to work at a rate that suits your current level of fitness. Gradings are held every six weeks by 7th degree masters to promote our students regularly. This ensures progression through the ranks at a rate to suit your individual ability.
Regular competitions are available to our members. We have at least three each year. Members compete with the same grade and same weight for adults and height for under 16 year olds.
We think that these different aspects of Taekwon-Do make it the most enjoyable and rewarding martial art available, so come along and see for yourself. See how to join section to find out how.
