Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. How can I start Taekwon-Do?
A. Contact your local BUTF School/Instructor. They are qualified and fully insured! Make an appointment to go and watch a class, that way you'll have a better idea of what will be expected of you. Some schools may offer a free trial class, some run courses specifically for beginners. See the how to join section for more details.
Q2. What will I need to wear?
A. All you will need for your first lesson are loose fitting clothes, e.g. Track suit trousers and a T-shirt.
Students train in bare feet so no special footwear is needed.
Q3. What sort of people take up Taekwon-Do?
A. Men, women and children can train in Taekwon-Do. Some train because they want a more interesting way to keep fit. Others want to learn self-defence, others find that it builds their levels of confidence. The people range from computer technicians, to shop assistants, from housewives to lawyers, and whatever their reasons for starting, the benefits are enormous.
Q4. How long will it take me to get to Black Belt?
A. Most people are capable of achieving the coveted Black Belt, but the time it takes varies from person to person. People's age, levels of co-ordination and the amount of time and effort they put in each week are all contributory factors. A dedicated student can achieve a Black Belt within 3 years.
Q5. How do I get to a Black Belt?
A. A student's progress is measured on a regular basis by attending "gradings" throughout the course of the year. Gradings are currently conducted by the BUTF's Chief Examiner and Chairman, Master Choy, 8th Degree Black Belt. The country's highest ranking Taekwon-do official.
Q6. Do I have to take part in competitions?
The BUTF hold/attend, at least 4 national competitions each year. Students are eligible to take part once they have passed their first grading. These competitions are open to any BUTF members, and some are open to any Taekwon-Do practitioner worldwide.
The competitions are not compulsory for students so, NO you don't have to participate in them, although most take part at some point in their training, as they are great fun!
Q7. How much does it cost?
Training fees for Adults are from as little as £2.50 and hour and for children less than £2.00 an hour. There are also further discounts for families. If you would like more information about training fees please contact us.
